Many of our customers asked for a Log Cabin Ruler for 1/2- and 1-inch finished strip widths, so we have added a fourth ruler to the Log Cabin series. Two things contribute to making "square" Log Cabin blocks, and our Log Cabin rulers serve perfectly:
- Cutting strips on lengthwise grain, so there is little to no stretch of the fabric as you sew.
- Cutting strips to exact length, so every strip fits, every time.
- All of our Log Cabin Rulers are used in the same way. Each ruler cuts 2 strip widths with a ratio of 2:1. The strip widths and strip lengths vary from ruler to ruler.
The 2:1 ratio means you can also use these rulers to cut pieces for "curved" Log Cabin blocks, where one side of the block is composed of strips that are X-wide and the other side of the block has strips twice that wide. The 2:1 ratio gives a great "curved" look. When many blocks are sewn together, the gentle steps appear to make a curved line across the surface of the quilt. Curved Log Cabin details are in Marti's book Log Cabin ABCs.
